This time, we have another look at the 2011 Ford Explorer test mule. Not to be confused with the previous test mule plastered all across the internet which was merely a Ford Freestyle/Taurus X with a Ford Flex front clip, this looks much closer to the production version of the Ford Explorer America Concept vehicle. According to Leftlane News, this mule actually has the production version of the 2011 Ford Explorer front clip grafted onto the Taurus X platform, otherwise known internally to Ford as "D3."
While this still is not a final look at the production model of the 2011 Ford Explorer, we can at least see hints of the Ford Explorer America concept appear in the front of this latest mule. Note very closely the headlights and front grille: you will notice resemblances. Otherwise, the rest of the sheet metal still is the Taurus X - note the uneven roof and otherwise identical body panels.
Hopefully we will have an even closer look at the production model in the upcoming weeks and months. At least this seems to oppose my fear and doubt that Ford might have been forced to can the Explorer.
