Toyo Tires Proxes ST

Upsizing to larger wheels dramatically increases the appeal to your Explorer; it may be the single most noticeable difference. But those good looks are worth nothing unless you pair your new wheels with the best all-season performance tires on the market - Toyo Proxes ST. That's right, for the price, performance and all other variables considered there is no better handling tire on the market than the Toyo Proxes ST. In fact, take a look at the next car show you go to and take a look at the custom trucks and SUV's and I'm willing to bet half of them have Toyo Proxes ST's.

Exterior Customizations: Diamond Cut Headlights

One of the most dramatic cosmetic upgrades you can make to your front end also is extremely beneficial to the performance of light output. Beginning in 2001 for Explorer Sports, Sport Tracs, and 2002 with the regular Explorers Ford provided from the factory headlights that mimic these, but Explorer owners for 1995-2001 were left in the dust. In comparison to today's vehicles with high intensity discharge lighting, the stock headlights and bulbs are unacceptable. A dramatic amount of lighting is lost due to the poor factory headlight design. But thanks to the Diamond Cut Clear Headlights and clear corners, we have an excellent alternative.

With a reflective internal headlight design that mimics a diamond (hence the name), light output is greatly increased and enhanced due to directional reflection. Combined with high performance bulbs such as Sylvania Silverstars, you can have near HID performance for about half the cost and stay street legal as well. The Diamond Cut Headlights and clear corners are DOT approved, and are very easy to install. The build quality matches OEM, although there is a slight issue with the sealing with any aftermarket light assembly. This is easily addressed however by sealing the edges with silicone.

With the headlight and corner lenses coming to roughly $225 shipped, and approximately another $45 spent on Sylvania Silverstar bulbs (highly recommended), the result is significantly upgraded lighting performance that far exceeds stock output. This upgrade package will significantly improve the front end aesthetics and set your Explorer apart from the rest. The styling is sure not to disappear anytime soon; after all the current Ford headlight assemblies resemble this design almost identically. You really have nothing to lose from this upgrade. Compared to similar style import lighting upgrades, this is a fraction of the cost because it is a domestic vehicle. Its still affordable for the college student, not much more from what a billet grille or Speed Grille would cost.

Diamond Cut Headlights and Clear Corners can be found on eBay Motors ranging from $125-150 plus shipping for the package. Alternatively you may use ProCarParts.com, an online car accessory parts distributor. With many Explorer owners already having made the upgrade, you can rest assured the quality and performance is there.

Volant Performance 4.0 SOHC Cold Air Intake Kit

Since owning my Explorer, I have exhausted almost every aftermarket option for a cold air intake kit. I was tired of the mediocre MAC intake kit and metal tubing; the Volant Performance Cold Air Intake kit was exactly what I was looking for. Unique styling, as well as an enclosed filter box would help improve horsepower while improving the life expectancy of the conical air filter. Add a unique carbon fiber simulated look on the filter box, and you have even more under hood aesthetics.

Explorer Express X-Spec Suspension Kit

For 1995-2001 Ford Explorers

Drive any Sport Utility Vehicle, and at no extra charge you'll always receive the poor handling characteristics that has become quite infamous. It's been several years since the initial SUV rollover media hype, but not too long ago who could forget Ford versus Firestone. Once again SUV safety, or lack thereof, became the media spotlight. Needless to say the Ford Explorer (or affectionately known as "Exploder" by non-Ford owners) became America's Most Wanted -- both in completely seperate territories. The first aspect as Firestone's scapegoat (Firestone said Ford's design of the Explorer, not their tires, was responsible for the tire blowouts); in the complete opposite respect, despite negative publicity the number one selling Sport Utility Vehicle in North America.
